Alocasia Amazonica and Fittonia terrariums for BBT

The advantage of a terrarium, beside the aesthetic part, is definitely low maintenance plants.

As I had the occasion to create three terrariums for the spring marketing campaign for BBT, I chose baby Alocasias and Fittonia plants with pink veins, for a splash of colour.

I found in the BBT shops Kilner jars, latex gloves, a spray bottle and all the ingredients for the aroid soil mix required for any of my tropical plant: compost, orchid bark and perlite.

Last year in August, I received a beautiful Alocasia Amazonica and, upon repotting, I discovered 10 corms hidden between the roots. I placed all of them in a small closed jar with perlite and watched for months how fragile roots emerged and, finally, gorgeous leaves as well.

To create the terrariums, first I placed a layer of pebbles, then a layer of sphagnum moss. Next I added a layer of aroid soil mix, placed the plants and finished with another shallow layer of moss. I misted the whole new environment with enough water to have the soil layer moist.

The terrarium environment will give the baby plants the right levels of humidity to develop further, and shelter them from draft.

Check the BBT Facebook page for details on how to win one of the three terrariums or head to the shops to see the prizes next to the tills!
